Nathan joins St. Joseph Health Ministries as expanded function dental assistant

Lancaster County native Tammy Nathan, who has 25 years of dental experience, has joined St. Joseph Health Ministries’ clinical team.

The nonprofit St. Joseph Health Ministries operates the children’s oral health initiative “Brush. Brush. Smile!,” which provides free dental care to economically disadvantaged children throughout Lancaster County.

Nathan is an expanded function dental assistant and works on Brush. Brush. Smile!’s mobile dental clinics, the “Brush Brush Buses.”

A graduate of Calvary Christian Academy, Nathan earned a certificate in dental assisting from what is now Lancaster County Career and Technology Center. In 2008, she earned the expanded function dental assistant designation from Keystone Technical Institute.

Prior to joining St. Joseph Health Ministries, Nathan worked in private practice in Harrisburg.

Nathan resides with her family in Landisville.

Phillips Office Solutions adopts three area families for Christmas

This year brought a name change for Phillips Office Solutions, formerly The Phillips Group.

But one thing remained constant: the family-owned company’s annual holiday adopt-a-family program.

Phillips this year adopted three families – one each in the Harrisburg, Mechanicsburg and West Shore school districts – comprising five children and five adults.

Linda Kazar, who works in Phillips’ credit and collections department, shopped for the families on three consecutive Saturdays. Toys, clothing and supermarket gift cards were on her list.

Many other Phillips employees got involved by participating in fall soup lunches at the company’s Middletown main office. They paid $5 each Wednesday, with the proceeds supporting the adopt-a-family program.

This year, Phillips developed a cookbook featuring employees’ favorite recipes. Sales of the cookbook also benefited the holiday program, which raised a total of $2,200.

With record 2011, 'Bouquets for Books' tops 10,000 children's books collected in six years

This year represented a new chapter in the history of “Bouquets for Books.”

The sixth annual event – presented by Royer’s Flowers & Gifts and Stephenson’s Flowers & Gifts – collected an event-record 1,837 new children’s books for area public libraries. That pushed the six-year total to more than 10,000 titles collected.

“We set an ambitious goal for this year, and our customers came through in a big way,” said Greg Royer, president and CEO of Royer’s. “As a result, children and families will have great new books to choose from at their local libraries.”

From Nov. 7-12, Royer’s and Stephenson’s provided a free bouquet to customers when they donated a new book.

The companies then presented the books to the county library systems and to the independent Hershey Public Library. The breakdown:

• Berks County Public Libraries: 285 books
• Cumberland County Library System: 220 books
• Dauphin County Library System: 330 books
• Hershey Public Library: 96 books
• Lebanon County Libraries: 319 books
• Library System of Lancaster County: 444 books
• York County Library System: 239 books

Phillips Office Solutions donates $15,000 to Science in Motion through Elizabethtown College

Science in Motion was almost stopped in its tracks this year because of a 60 percent cut in state funding.

That cut jeopardized a program that provides modern scientific equipment and professional development opportunities to approximately one-dozen school districts in Berks, Lancaster, Lebanon and Schuylkill counties.

But a $15,000 donation from Phillips Office Solutions will help to keep Science in Motion’s royal blue Honda Element – with yellow DNA strands on each side – on the road.

“Basically, Phillips Office Solutions saved our program for the second half of the school year,” said Wendy Martin, director of Science in Motion at Elizabethtown College. “We would have had to severely cut back on services or possibly not run the last few months of the school year because our funding from the state would have run out.”

Statewide, a consortium of 12 colleges and universities provides Science in Motion programs to more than 200 school districts. Elizabethtown College has been involved since the 2008-09 school year, operating Science in Motion out of its Center for Community and Civic Engagement.

Science in Motion provides free use of equipment and materials that school districts neither could afford nor would have need for at all times during the school year.

After surveying high school science teachers, Martin purchased bio-technology equipment from their wish lists. Martin delivers the equipment to the schools and even helps team teach classes if requested.

Peter Phillips, president of Phillips Office Solutions, said Science in Motion was an investment worth making because it saves taxpayer dollars in the long run.

“It would not be practical for each school district to purchase this equipment,” Phillips said, “but it is of great value for science students to have the kinds of hands-on experiences that this equipment provides.”

The nonprofit St. Joseph Health Ministries has added dental hygienist Mary Wubbolt to its clinical team.

St. Joseph Health Ministries operates the children’s oral health initiative “Brush. Brush. Smile!,” which provides free dental care to economically disadvantaged children throughout Lancaster County.

Wubbolt, of Manheim, has been a dental hygienist for seven years, including four years with Penn Manor School District and most recently with a private practice in Lancaster.

A certified public health dental hygiene practitioner, Wubbolt has served as a member of the adjunct clinical faculty at Harrisburg Area Community College.
Wubbolt was a dental assistant for 18 years before pursuing her dental hygiene degree from HACC.

Besides seeing children on Brush. Brush. Smile!’s mobile dental clinics, Wubbolt will lead St. Joseph Health Ministries’ partnership with the Healthy Beginnings Plus program at Ephrata Hospital. She will provide dental screenings and education to new mothers in need.

First-grader Heisey wins flower delivery for class in Royer's coloring contest

Last year, her brother, Alex, won the Royer’s Kids Club’s birthday card design contest.

This year, it is first-grader Marisa Heisey’s turn.

Marisa is the winner of the kids club’s back-to-school coloring contest. For her version of a Royer’s Flowers & Gifts delivery truck, she won a flower delivery to her class at J.E. Fritz Elementary School in the Conestoga Valley School District.

Royer’s delivered a fall arrangement to Jen Shaffer’s class. Marisa and her 18 classmates each received a carnation.

Marisa is the daughter of Nevin and Joy Heisey.

“She enjoys arts and crafts,” Joy Heisey said. “She definitely enjoys drawing.”

“Plaque Attack” would make for a compelling name of a science-fiction movie. That is, if it weren’t such a real-life problem for so many children.

In its ongoing efforts to improve oral health in Lancaster County, the nonprofit St. Joseph Health Ministries is bringing its Dental Olympics – complete with a game of freeze tag called Plaque Attack – to three Lancaster County elementary schools in October.

The schools are Burrowes in the School District of Lancaster and Salisbury and Paradise in Pequea Valley School District.

The Dental Olympics teaches students about oral health while promoting physical fitness. The activities focus on brushing, flossing, food choices and what to expect during a visit to the dentist.

During the 2010-2011 school year, nearly 4,000 children completed the program. Meanwhile, St. Joseph Health Ministries provided customized oral health education to another 5,700 students.

The October school visits coincide with National Dental Hygiene Month. Poor oral health, combined with other risk factors, may contribute to heart disease, according to medical experts. Bacteria in the teeth and gums can travel through the bloodstream and attach to fatty plaques, potentially leading to heart attacks and strokes.

Because of budget cuts, the Carlisle Area School District’s annual back-to-school staff luncheon was in jeopardy.

But The Phillips Group stepped in with a $2,500 donation, saving the event this year for some 400 staff members.

“This luncheon has become a highlight of getting the school year off on the right foot,” said Tom Longenecker, the school district’s director of finance. “We’re very grateful that The Phillips Group was able to cover that cost for us this year.”

St. Joseph Health Ministries’ 2011 Gala raised $35,663 for the nonprofit’s children’s oral health initiative, “Brush. Brush. Smile!”

The annual Gala took place Sept. 9 at the Cork Factory Hotel, Lancaster, with the theme of “A Night Beneath the Stars … Making Smiles Bright!” The evening featured dinner, live music and dancing, and silent and live auctions.

Printer J.W. Boarman Co. makes six-figure investment in Baltimore Empowerment Zone

Edmund Eck is a son of Baltimore. He grew up here, went to school here, and, after serving in Vietnam, joined long-time local printer J.W. Boarman Co. Inc.

Starting as a pressman, he advanced into estimating and, in 1994, bought the full-service printer.

Through good times and challenging times, Boarman has remained here, the past 24 years at 1421 Ridgely St. – a long touchdown from M&T Bank Stadium, home of the Baltimore Ravens football team.

Boarman is in the Washington Village Pigtown Neighborhood, part of the Baltimore Empowerment Zone that seeks to bring investment to economically distressed communities.

This summer, Boarman made a six-figure investment in the neighborhood – and in the future of its employees – by purchasing a Konica-Minolta C8000. The full-color digital press can print as many as 80 pages per minute. Jobs include small-run books, postcards, business cards, flyers, labels.

“Anything that will fit on it,” Eck said, noting that the printer can accommodate text- and cover-weight paper, coated or uncoated sheets.

“As our business evolved,” Eck said, “it became necessary to look into a digital color press to complement our two- and four-color offset printing. The color quality of the C8000 is impressive, and the speed enables us to deliver a finished product to our clients in a fraction of the time it took before. There’s a lot of work out there that we were passing up because we couldn’t be competitive on it.”

Customers today want things cheaper and faster.

“And they want the quality there,” Eck said. “With the Konica-Minolta, we can proof a job, print it and ship it in one day.”

The C8000 is powered by a CREO color server, which acts as the print controller integrating into Boarman’s Prinergy digital workflow. The configuration is a first for a Baltimore printer.

Boarman converted what had been an employee break room to accommodate the C8000, which measures approximately 15 feet long, six feet deep, and five feet high.

Eck said that together with his business partner, Rob Close, and key staff members, they considered a range of makes and models before settling on the C8000. Also playing into the selection was Boarman’s confidence in The Phillips Group, a Konica-Minolta dealer that also will service the C8000.

Katie Witmer wins Royer's Kids Club birthday card design contest

Katie Witmer knows what one of her birthday cards will look like when she turns 12 this fall. She should. After all, she designed it.

Katie, who is entering sixth grade at Donegal Middle School, Lancaster County, is the winner of this year’s Royer’s Kids Club birthday card design contest. The card will be emailed to hundreds of kids club members on their birthdays, starting this month.

Katie will receive flowers on her birthday as her prize for submitting the winning design.

Katie is the daughter of Sean and Sherry Witmer of East Donegal Township, who also have three older sons. Sherry Witmer said Katie is a jewelry maker (she sells her bracelets through a country store) and is “always drawing.”

Although flowers often are the subject of her drawings, her birthday card design features two fish and the words, “Making a splash on your birthday.”

'Royer's Stems Hunger' collects more than half ton of food for area food banks

Royer’s Flowers & Gifts collected more than a half ton of food for area food banks with its inaugural “Royer’s Stems Hunger” event, which took place June 27-July 2.

The event benefited the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank and the Greater Berks Food Bank.

Royer’s asked its customers to bring canned foods to any one of the 17 Royer’s or Stephenson’s Flowers & Gifts in Berks, Cumberland, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon and York counties. In return, customers received a free carnation for each can, up to a maximum of six carnations per family per visit.

Royer’s and Stephenson’s collected a total of 1,363 pounds – or enough to provide some 1,065 meals.

“We couldn’t be more pleased with the response from our customers,” said Greg Royer, president and CEO of Royer’s Flowers. “They really came through for the food banks and people in need. We truly appreciate our customers’ generosity.”

The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank distributes more than 16 million pounds of food and grocery products every year to more than 600 soup kitchens, shelters and food pantries in 27 central Pennsylvania counties.

The Greater Berks Food Bank collects, stores and distributes food to more than 270 food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, after-school programs, and senior housing facilities in Berks, Schuylkill and western Montgomery counties.

Customers of the Giant Food Store at 235 N. Reservoir St., Lancaster, will find toothpaste, toothbrushes and floss in aisle nine.

But on Thursdays this summer, they will find an entire dental team parked just outside the store.

St. Joseph Health Ministries, which operates the Brush. Brush. Smile! children’s oral health initiative, is bringing its “Brush Brush Bus” – a 40-foot dental practice on wheels – to the store’s parking lot.

Free dental care will be provided to eligible Lancaster County children every Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 14 through Aug. 25.

Children who are on medical assistance or are uninsured for dental care, who have not had a routine check-up in the past six months, and who qualify financially may be eligible for this program.

The Brush Brush Bus boasts a professional dental team that will provide a full range of dental care as needed, including exams, X-rays, cleanings, fluoride treatments, sealants, extractions and fillings.

“When school lets out for the summer, we work with community organizations and form partnerships such as this one with Giant in order to continue reaching children and families who otherwise wouldn’t have access to dental care,” said Sean Reynolds, president and CEO of St. Joseph Health Ministries.

Giant Food Stores is helping to promote the dental visits by posting signs and handing out flyers – in English and in Spanish – at the Reservoir Street store and six other Giant locations in Lancaster County.

Royer’s Flowers & Gifts has created a new charitable event that will collect canned goods for two area food banks.

And to help kick off “Royer’s Stems Hunger,” participants in a June 28 Royer’s Kids Club event are being asked to donate a canned food as their price of admission.

The food will be donated to the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank or to the Greater Berks Food Bank depending upon which store a child visits. Royer’s has 17 stores in Berks, Cumberland, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon and York counties.

At the kids club event, children ages 5 to 12 will be able to make an arrangement – in an empty food can. Participants also will have an opportunity to enter the kids club’s 2011-12 birthday card design contest. The winner will receive a flower delivery on his or her birthday.

Russo worked in private practice in York from 1990 until earlier this year. He also has served as director of dental services at Hoffman Homes for Youth in Gettysburg and as a dentist at the Milton Hershey School in Derry Township.

A member of the American Dental Society and the Pennsylvania Dental Society, Russo has been recognized in the annual topDentists list published in Harrisburg Magazine. He is a graduate of Georgetown University Dental School.

Russo and his wife live in Reinholds. They have two children.

Phillips Group's 'Document Destruction' raises $235 for York's Downtown Inc

It is commonplace for visitors to business expos to walk away with a bag full of giveaways and other goodies.

But some people showed up at this year’s York County Chamber Business & Technology Expo with their own bags – filled with old bank statements, personal records and other documents in need of secure shredding.

On May 4, they pulled their cars up outside Toyota Arena at the York Expo Center. That’s where The Phillips Group, central Pennsylvania’s leading independent office products company, had parked its secure shredding truck as part of an event called “Document Destruction for Downtown York.”

Drayer Physical Therapy Institute moves Clearfield center to accommodate growth

Drayer Physical Therapy Institute has moved its Clearfield outpatient physical therapy center to larger space within The Clearfield Plaza in order to accommodate its growth.

The center moved to 500 Plaza Drive from 160 Plaza Drive. At 6,900 square feet, the new space is nearly twice as large as the previous location.

Drayer Physical Therapy Institute originally opened in Clearfield in 2004 with only three employees. The center, which is still managed by Bill Serena, has grown to 21 employees.

In the past year, Hummelstown-based Drayer Physical Therapy Institute achieved a number of significant growth milestones.

Increasing by nearly 50 percent the number of outpatient physical therapy centers that it operates, Drayer expanded to the Pacific Northwest, with two centers in the Seattle area. Drayer also entered Alabama, Ohio, Tennessee and West Virginia for the first time.

Drayer Works supports traditional Drayer centers in central Pennsylvania so that they become more efficient and effective at handling workers’ comp cases. A Drayer center can direct a workers’ comp patient to Drayer Works for a comprehensive screening process that assesses his ability to lift, push and carry materials, based on their job description.

Drayer Physical Therapy Institute has acquired Advantage Physical Therapy & Sports Performance and its two clinics in Harrisonburg and Weyers Cave, Va.

Terms of the transaction between the privately owned companies were not disclosed.

In addition to its core business of outpatient orthopedic physical therapy, Advantage (www.advantageptsp.com) has carved niches for itself in aquatic therapy, women’s health and hand therapy. Advantage has copyrighted sports performance programs in speed development and in knee-injury prevention for female athletes.

To celebrate National Children’s Dental Health Month, the nonprofit St. Joseph Health Ministries is bringing its oral health education programs to elementary students and pre-schoolers in Lancaster County.

Linda Kazar did the holiday gift shopping for three central Pennsylvania families – not counting her own.

Kazar, who works in The Phillips Group’s credit and collections department, spent part of each lunch hour for one week purchasing clothing, toys and other gifts for the families. It’s something that Kazar looks forward to doing as part of Phillips’ annual holiday adopt-a-family program.

Two of the families are stationed at Fort Indiantown Gap in Lebanon County; the other family resides in the Northeastern School District in York County.

“It makes me happy just knowing that these kids are going to have a nice Christmas,” she said as she wrapped presents at Phillips’ Middletown headquarters.

Every Wednesday during the fall, Phillips employees held soup lunches at the company’s Middletown main office. They paid $5 each to participate and raised more than $2,000 for the adopt-a-family program.

Rutter's breaks ground for new store in Greene Township, Franklin County

Rutter’s Farm Stores has broken ground for a 5,200-square-foot convenience store at routes 30 and 997 in Greene Township, Franklin County.

The 24-hour store will support 80 jobs during construction and will create 40 permanent jobs when it opens this spring. It will be Rutter’s fourth store in Franklin County and 57th in Pennsylvania.

When customers pull up to the store, they will find 16 gas-fueling positions as well as kerosene and diesel. Dedicated truck diesel fueling will be available behind the store, and next to the store will be a glass, two-bay automatic carwash.

The store’s “green” attributes will include LED exterior lighting, energy-saving skylights, computerized energy and light management, and a white reflective roof. Customers will be able to do their parts by tossing empty cans, bottles and old newspapers into Rutter’s recycling bins.

Hands-free entrance doors will lead to a long list of additional store amenities, including touch-free restrooms, seven high-definition televisions and a seating area for 14.

Touch-screen ordering will provide easy access to Rutter’s vast fresh-food menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The beverage menu will boast six flavors of frozen beverages, 16 flavors of fountain soft drinks, two self-serve milkshake machines and a premium-coffee island.

Other conveniences will include a surcharge-free M&T Bank ATM and Blockbuster video rental kiosk.

Connells Maple Lee Flowers & Gifts has acquired the business operations of Cua’s of Columbus, which closed on Saturday. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Starting today, Cua’s owner Michael Cua has joined Connells Maple Lee’s Powell store as wedding manager. Cua’s phone lines also transferred to Powell. Customers who had charge accounts with Cua’s will have new ones with Connells Maple Lee.

Cua announced the transition in a letter to his customers, noting that “you can be assured of continuing to receive the same great-quality product, service and design as you have had in the past.”

The Powell store, which debuted in January at 8573 Owenfield Drive, is open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. It can be reached at 740-548-4082. Wendy Jolliff is the store manager.

St. Joseph Health Ministries’ Beth Zimmerman has been honored with the 2010 Community Dental Health Award by her peers in the Pennsylvania Dental Hygienists’ Association.

She accepted the award at the association’s recent Annual Session and Keystone Dental Health Conference in the Poconos.

Zimmerman is an original member of St. Joseph Health Ministries’ dental team. She is dental hygienist for the nonprofit organization’s children’s oral health initiative, “Brush. Brush. Smile!”

Sean Reynolds, president and CEO of St. Joseph Health Ministries, lauded Zimmerman for her positive representation of Brush. Brush. Smile! in the community and in her profession.

Starting today, Wayne Noss Flowers has relocated to a larger, new store at 100 York Road, Carlisle, and is operating as Royer’s Flowers & Gifts.

Family-owned Royer’s last year bought Wayne Noss Flowers, which had been at 525 Mountain Road, Boiling Springs.

The 4,800-square-foot store is nearly three times larger than the Boiling Springs store and features a walk-in display cooler with a large fresh flower display and a drive-up window for easy pickups.

The store serves Carlisle, Boiling Springs, Mount Holly Springs, Shippensburg and the Shermans Dale and Loysville areas in Perry County. It is open 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. It can be reached at 241-6100.

You might say that Mark Shaffer’s tank was running on empty, figuratively speaking. Really he was running out of time to come forward as the latest winner in Rutter’s Farm Stores’ summer gas giveaway.

Shaffer, of Spring Garden Township, York County, had been away on vacation when his winning Rutter’s Rewards card number was drawn. Thanks to a clerk at Rutter’s North Hills Road store who recognized him, Shaffer was able to claim his prize before the midnight deadline.

Shaffer, an executive chef, has three cars, not counting his wife’s. When he’s not driving to work in New Oxford, he might be heading to Baltimore as a Ravens season-ticket holder.

“So it’s going to be used up pretty quick,” he said of his free gas.

Rutter’s Farm Stores continues to feed the smart phone app-etite.

Rutter’s has added an Android app to complement its previously introduced iPhone and Blackberry apps. The apps are available as free downloads on www.rutters.com and from their respective app stores: Apple App Store, BlackBerry App World and Android Market.

With the apps, customers can get directions to their nearest Rutter’s stores, check current gas prices, and redeem paperless mobile coupons sent directly to their smart phones.

Customers also can register their Rutter’s Rewards loyalty cards, which when used on purchases of more than 1,600 everyday items will earn them cents off gasoline. More than 160,000 customers have saved money on gasoline since the debut of Rutter’s Rewards.

Clicking on the Rutter’s Rewards icon on their smart phone displays will bring up their unique member number and bar code, which can be used for transactions instead of a Rutter’s Rewards card or key fob.

She graduated from Central Dauphin High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in interior design from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Doug Davis believes in Rutter’s Farm Stores: he eats lunch there nearly every day.

But he didn’t believe what he was hearing when a phone call from the company informed him that he had won free gas for one year.

“I thought it was some kind of joke,” said Davis, who drives a trash truck for a living. “I was getting ready to hang up.”

Royer's, Connells Maple Lee kids clubs raise $816 for Operation Homefront

With their Fourth of July events, the kids clubs of sister companies Royer’s Flowers & Gifts and Connells Maple Lee Flowers & Gifts raised $816 for the Pennsylvania and Ohio chapters of Operation Homefront.

The nonprofit Operation Homefront provides emergency financial and other assistance to service members and wounded warriors.

The kids clubs gave children ages 5 to 12 an opportunity to create and take home an arrangement featuring red ribbon, white carnations and daisies, and blue water in a vase, as well as an American flag and a patriotic pin. There was no charge to participate, but a $5 donation per child was requested, with all proceeds benefiting Operation Homefront.

Narinesingh, whose sales territory is Harrisburg, graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in organic chemistry.
